SCARAB will employ the same "leave no trace" clean-up plan as in years past (which has worked well for us for several years within this group of people), collecting trash all week so as to avoid things blowing away and to make the last day on the playa less difficult. We will walk a grid in our camp to get every speck, then devote time each day to walking the common areas of the playa. The following has been distributed to all camp members:

Preparation:

A) Structures, projects, and costumes should be designed in a manner that avoids the use of materials that shed or otherwise could become Matter Out Of Place (MOOP). This includes, but is not limited to items such as feather boas, reed fencing, astroturf or carpet without a rubber backing (lay a tarp down first), streamers, glass, and styrofoam.

B) Pack to reduce potential trash. Remove any packaging materials before leaving for the playa. Avoid foods that create trash, like nuts in shells, fruit with cores, bony meats, etc.

C) Bring extra trash bags and plan on picking up more trash than you create. When packing your vehicle, leave extra room for trash that will need to be hauled out and the end of the event.

D) Label your gear. This includes chairs, cups, or anything else that might wander off from your camp and need to be returned to it's rightful owner.

E) Educate ourselves and fellow Black Rock Citizens about the LNT policies expected by the community. A good reference source can be found at earthguardians.burningman.com/clean.html

LNT in Practice:

A) Everyone is encouraged to clean as they go, to avoid letting anything hit the ground, and to be aware of and secure any loose objects which could potentially become wind borne and become MOOP.

B) All structures, to the extent possible, should be pre-manufactured off-site to minimize the

generation of sawdust, shavings and similar construction waste. In the event that onsite construction is required, drop cloths will be required to collect all debris.

C) All shower structures will be placed within evaporation ponds, constructed of 6 mil black plastic, supported on all sides by 2X4s. Members are encouraged to use the evaporation ponds when brushing their teeth, to avoid contaminating the Playa with toothpaste residue. All non-evaporated gray water and resulting residue be containerized and hauled offsite for proper disposal. Evaporation pond functionality and integrity will be checked periodically and immediately repaired if necessary.

D) Separate trash into the following categories: 1. non-burnable, non-recyclable trash. 2. non-toxic, burnable trash. 3. recyclable aluminum. Burnable trash will be only be burned at public burn platforms and a (larger than) proportionate amount of ashes removed for proper disposal. Recyclable aluminum will be taken to recycle camp. All other refuse will be removed from the

playa and disposed of in a responsible manner consistent with LNT ethics. More information regarding acceptable trash disposal locations can be found at

www.burningman.com/on_the_p...rash.html

E) All vehicles on site will be inspected for potential fluid leaks. Those vehicles that are experiencing leaks will require a secured barrier between the vehicle and the playa and afford containment and removal. All vehicular fluids collected will be removed for proper disposal.

Departure:

A) Each member is expected to participate in 2 hours of playa cleanup OUTSIDE of the village prior to final camp and village cleanup. Once camp breakdown is completed each camp is expected to sweep their entire camp area in a grid, removing all debris and traces of foreign matter for proper disposal.

B) All stakes, rebar and other structure securing devices will be removed from the playa. Any holes created on the playa will be back filled, tamped, and leveled.

C) The last member at the site will perform a final grid sweep, assuring the camp is in compliance with LNT ideals.
